Saint James's Palace

This is London's aristocratic and secret district, whose name derives from its royal palace. As at Buckingham Palace, the Guards stand sentinel, because this is the official seat of the Court.

The heart of the district was built in the 17th century for London's aristocrats, with grand mansions around a square, and a beautiful church designed by Sir Christopher Wren.

Suppliers of luxury goods - wine, cheese, hats, shoes and everything one needs to live like a king, set up shop, and are still here to tempt you.

General de Gaulle established his headquarters here.

Saint James's became the district for gentleman's clubs, which are difficult to recognise because they do not have their names on their doors. Why is this? Discover the reason when you come on the walk.

The architecture of some of these clubs - the Athenaeum, the Oxford and Cambridge, the Reform (where Phileas Fogg started his journey around the world in eighty days), is magnificent.

The walk ends near Green Park Underground station.

The luxury shops are not far, and Fortnum and Mason's tea rooms are a couple of moments walk away.
