Democracy had a long and difficult birth...conflict between the king and his barons, civil war, the eleven year republic, the "glorious revolution", universal suffrage. We are still waiting for the end of the current reform of the House of Lords.

Sir Winston Churchill, Oliver Cromwell, together with Richard I ("Lionheart") and the British lion himself...

will be with us on the visit, symbols of the spirit of the nation.

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is where the kings and queens of the United Kingdom are crowned. William the Conqueror was consecrated there on Christmas Day 1066, and Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

Behind the public facade of Westminster there is a more private area, favoured by Members of Parliament as a place to live, with charming streets of eighteenth century houses. Walking through these one would hardly believe one was in London.
